Walking in the Ways of God

Jesus referred to Himself as “the Way, the Truth and the Life” in John 14:6 as He stated that He imitated God the Father in all that He did which is a reference to the scriptures where Moses said, “Now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require from you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways …” (Deuteronomy 10:12).

How is it even possible for man to imitate God? After all isn’t the Lord an all consuming fire? Is He not perfect in all of His ways?

Yes. These attributes of God are true and added to this is the command of God to be perfect as He is perfect and we are to follow Him in all of His ways turning neither to the left nor to the right.

The role of grace and mercy is to make up what we lack in our walk with God, we all sin and fall short of the glory of God but we are still to imitate God, even if that imitation is pale.

We should look to how He clothes the naked, (Genesis 3:21), ‘The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them,’ so too should you also clothe the naked. He visited the sick (Genesis 18:1), ‘Now the LORD appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre’ [while he was still recovering from circumcision], so too should you also visit the sick. He comforted mourners, as it says (in Genesis 25:11), ‘After the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac,’ so too should you also comfort mourners. He buried the dead, as in Deuteronomy 34:6, ‘And He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab,’ so too should you also bury the dead.

Jesus fed the hungry, brought healing to the sick and taught correctly the word of God, He has mercy on the sinful, rescues the perishing, heals the brokenhearted, restores homes and families, and does good to all. He is the God of absolute integrity, truth, holiness, and justice. He is righteous in His every decision.

The Christian is called a Christian because he or she is choosing to learn from the Lord and walk as He walks. We must study the commands of God but also the words of Jesus in order to imitate Him. We must imitate Jesus as He imitated the Father so that we can take that way of living to a dying world and show them the way of grace and love while calling on them to turn from their wicked ways and join us in walking the path of righteousness.

It is our obligation to bring life and light to this world even when it choosing darkness and death. We must walk with the Lord in His way until the very end because it is life more abundant and free for those who are perishing.
