The Head of the Year and the Last Trump

Happy New Year! On the Hebrew or Biblical calendar we have arrived at Rosh Hashanah or the head of the year. This is one of the more interesting days on the calendar and the beginning of what are known as the Days of Awe.

This is the day that is observed for two days by Jews because of the diaspora when the Jews were taken into Babylon. It is the only biblical feast day that begins on a new moon and because of the difficulty in identifying and proclaiming this day to people both in Israel and out, it became known as the day you didn’t know the day or the hour it began.

It is also the day to coronate the king in Israel because it is the traditional anniversary of the creation of Adam. After all you can not have a king without a subject, someday Jesus will be crowned King.

Rosh Hashanah is also known as Yom Teruah, the day of blowing or the day of trumpets. An interesting thing to note is that traditionally for thousands of years there has been a pattern of blowing three cycles of three patterns until the shofar is blown a total of 99 times and there is a final trump.

This year also brings the year of Jubilee, a season when the inheritance of the Lord will be restored, for Israel this includes the land.

The point of this season it to remember that whatever else may happen we should look to the Lord, the King of Glory. He sits on His throne, He alone judges the nations and their people.

Great trouble may lie ahead but the Lord is still our God, we should not be ignorant He will return with a might shout and the sound of the shofar. We can rejoice because He will restore to us our inheritance and we shall praise His name.
