Former New York Mayor Rudy Giullani challenged current New York Mayor Bill De Blasio’s handling of that cities homeless policy that allows people to sleep on the streets as well as urinate and defecate wherever they like as regressive and cruel.
De Blasio and other liberals believe that the homeless have a right to sleep on the street. Under his administration New York has returned to the 70’s and 80’s when many thought there was no hope to the problem of homeless sleeping on the street.
The former mayor correctly identified the liberal progressive ideology as being from the dark ages when people failed to love their neighbor or intervene in their lives. After all it was called the dark ages for a reason.
The same is true for liberal policies such as redistribution of wealth, social engineering, and weak national defense.
San Francisco has a similar problem with it’s homeless, as they are a bastion of godless progressivism. Their wanton disregard for those living on the streets is sad to behold.
Just a few months ago, I witnessed people sleeping on the streets of San Francisco under cardboard boxes in wealthy neighborhoods like what I thought a third world country would endure.
The public urination problem has become so bad that street lamps have fallen on cars due to rust caused by homeless (and others) going where they please. The city has gone so far as to use special paint that causes splash back on the person relieving themselves.
It is not a kindness to allow people to live like this, but rather another example of godless thinking. We are commanded to love our neighbors like ourselves, which would include a city government that does not tolerate such things but finds out why the person is living on the street and seeking help from the body of Christ.
While government programs have a limited role to play it should be the church that feeds and shelters the homeless. The church that can train and help in job searches, clothes, showers and grooming. The government can help with serious issues like mental health.
When we elect godless mayors and governors we should understand that they will allow their warped understanding of the world to create a heartless society using progressive guilt and division.
But when we elect leaders with a Christian worldview they bring tough love that is truly compassionate by making the homeless face their choices and get the help they need. We must also understand that it takes a Godly community to help their neighbor and the stranger living among them to create a society that truly ends homelessness.
