It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to sing praises to your name, O Most High;
to declare your steadfast love in the morning,
and your faithfulness by night,
to the music of the lute and the harp,
to the melody of the lyre.
For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your work;
at the works of your hands I sing for joy. -Psalms 92:1-4
Christians can often fail to realize the importance of showing the Lord gratitude. It turns out that giving thanks to the Lord is critical to overcoming sin and to keeping a sound mind (Deuteronomy 8, Romans 1).
Believers should start every day by thanking the Lord for allowing us to wake up in the morning. Deuteronomy chapter 8 commands us to give not only thanks for our food, but to take time to praise His name after we are full and satisfied, something most Americans experience several times a day.
But it is more than that. Giving thanks includes an attitude of gratitude (I had to write it). This includes being grateful and content with what we have been given even as we strive for improving our lives. We should be thankful for the transportation we have, the home we live in and even the families and church we are a part of.
When we are consistent in our thanks, we are in possession of the spirit the Lord wants us to have. This gives us a grateful heart and makes us the kind of person other people want to be around. This makes us more like Jesus.
Take time today to be grateful to the Lord. Give Him thanks for the many blessings you enjoy, even if you think they are few. When you do, you will be a blessing as well.
